Our areas of focus
QTS is committed to environmental stewardship
We practice being responsible stewards of the environment through implementing our water-free cooling systems across all our new data centers, our carbon reduction efforts, our commitment to clean energy, and our environmentally-focused engagement efforts in every community in which we live, work and operate.
A QTS, we believe how we deliver our data center services is just as important as what we deliver. Our ability to make significant strides in energy efficiency and sustainable practices is a testament to our investments in clean energy procurement, sustainability reporting transparency, and advanced data center design.
Transparency: We share our sustainable practices and show our progress with measurable objectives.
Operational Efficiency: We drive data center efficiency through innovation and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.
Community Leadership: We support local sustainability legislation and inspire our employees to be responsible stewards.
Carbon-Free Energy Sourcing: We work to source energy from carbon-free sources.
Water Conservation: We reduce water usage and track Water Utilization Effectiveness (WUE) for ongoing improvement.
QTS has developed a multi-pronged approach to target water inefficiencies within our portfolio of data centers. Read more about our water strategy in this whitepaper.
The data center can -and should- pave a path for environmentally focused efficiencies. Read more in this whitepaper.
Since 2018, we have been producing our annual sustainability report. Read them all here.
The QTS Freedom Design is a best-in-class standardized data center model implemented across all our new data centers. The design employs a low-pressure pumped refrigerant system to remove heat without using water.
The QTS water-free cooling system says more than 48 million gallons of water annually per data center – the equivalent of water use from more than 2,200 U.S. homes per year.
Because the cooling system does not consume water, QTS Freedom Design data centers deliver a Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) of 0. WUE is the most relevant metric for measuring water use and conservation in the data center industry.
As our go-forward plan for new data center builds, we will continue to use our water-free cooling system to improve water conservation in every community in which we operate.
QTS’s commitment to sourcing carbon-free energy also reinforces our water-reduction strategy, as the wind and solar energy sources we use do not utilize water to produce electricity. QTS has signed long-term contracts for solar- and wind-generated energy in multiple states, including Texas, Illinois, New Jersey and Georgia.
We also conduct diligent field testing and reporting to establish best-in-class erosion controls and storm water mitigatioin techniques.
Our Tree Replacement Program aims to replant more trees than are cleared during the construction of our data centers. By replacing the trees, we are minimizing the impact on the community and protecting the natural environment to support the entire ecosystem.
At our Fayetteville, Georgia data center campus under development, QTS is partner with Southern Conservation Trust, a Georgia-based 501(c)(3) public charity, to plant more than 12,000 native tree species in the region. The initative will sustain and grow resources by planting more trees locally than are cleared during data center construction.
QTS is the global data center leader across North America and Europe.
