What is a data center?

Data centers are the backbone of our modern, digitally connected lives. A data center is a specialized building that stores, manages and connects large amounts of digital information. Inside these data centers, thousands of servers run the applications and services that keep us connected across every facet of our life – from healthcare, education to financial services and more. As technologies like AI continue to evolve, the demand for data centers continues to grow.

WHY QTS

What it means to have QTS in your community

Our role as the digital infrastructure leader goes far beyond building and operating the world’s most advanced data centers. It means staying true to our core values and uplifting the communities in which we live, work and operate.

We are dedicated to enhancing the future prosperity of the community, the environment and business landscape by supporting local organizations to meet the needs of the community.

Responsibility

As a conscientious, purpose-driven organization, we listen and engage the community with our best-in-class standards for site development, construction and operations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does this mean for economic growth?

Data centers bring large investment to the area resulting in increased tax revenues. This revenue, at the direction of local leaders, can go towards addressing pressing issues for community members, including public works, community development programs and education.

Data centers create technology ecosystems, driving more technology and infrastructure companies to the area and creating more high-wage jobs. The building of a data center campus creates thousands of construction and building trade jobs. Data centers require ongoing maintenance, which generates revenue and job demand for furnishing and equipping, security, maintenance vendors and other on-site support companies.

We are committed to protecting our partner communities. QTS utilizes a water-free cooling system that cools our data centers without consuming water. In 2024, the QTS water-free cooling system saved nearly 1.5 billion gallons of water.

Because we have eliminated the need for water consumption, our data center will not impact the state’s rivers, lakes, or other water resources.

QTS is committed to building and operating sustainable data centers to minimize our environmental impact. Our facilities are designed to LEED standards, achieve Energy Star Building Certification and use Energy Star appliances. We are focused on using carbon-free sources whenever possible, investing in renewable energy projects, exploring innovative energy solutions and helping our customers use cleaner electricity at our sites.

QTS is committed to protecting the environment and wildlife habitats. In the building of our data centers, we conduct independent environmental studies, including wetlands, biological and habitat studies, and consult with environmental specialists during our site exploration and development phases to help protect the natural ecosystem.

In addition, QTS actively seeks to minimize and mitigate impacts to biological species and sensitive ecosystems and habitats by coordinating with environmental and wildlife agencies, and implementing construction activities outside of timeframes for mating, nesting and migration of certain species.

To further minimize the impact of our data center builds, QTS has developed a Tree Replacement Program that aims to replant more trees than cleared during the development of our data centers. By replacing the trees, we are minimizing the impact on the community and protecting the natural environment to support the entire ecosystem.

Additionally, lighting from the data center campus will preserve wildlife and natural areas and meet county code requirements. All lighting plans are reviewed by county officials.

We take pride in listening to the unique needs of each community to determine the best way in which we can contribute. We are committed to providing job opportunities, fostering economic growth, working with local suppliers and operating as trusted neighbors and responsible stewards of the environment and community resources.

We share our growth through diverse giving programs – including individual employee volunteerism and matched donations, corporate-sponsored events, grants to charitable organizations and success-based giving.
