Data Centre Campus
Our first data centre campus in the UK, redeveloping land at the former Power Station Site in Cambois, near Blyth. Learn more about the QTS data centre campus and our commitment to the Cambois community.

WHY QTS
As the digital infrastructure leader, businesses, governments and organisations rely on our data centres. We take our promise to connect the world with purpose, seriously. We do this through:
Data centres require thousands of skilled workers to design, construct and operate. We choose markets like Cambois/Blyth because of access to a highly skilled and motivated workforce.
We achieve our sustainability mission by prioritising both business success and ethical conduct. This means enhancing the lives of employees, customers, investors and communities while preserving the environment. We make sustainable choices across all aspects of our operations.
In line with our core values, we engage in a wide range of volunteer opportunities, community outreach and community partnerships to help others in need in the places we work.
QTS is building new data centres to provide the infrastructure necessary to support the surging demands of an increasingly digital world; and in doing so, we remain committed to minimising environmental impacts. Our data centres feature a water-free cooling system, are built to green building standards and aims to source power from carbon free sources.
As a data centre sustainability leader, QTS has developed a multi-pronged approach to target water inefficiencies within its portfolio of global data centres and thereby support both the environment and the communities in which it operates.
QTS will use its industry-leading water-free cooling system, significantly reducing requirements on local water supplies. The cooling systems operate with a free-cooling technology which helps to minimise power consumption
Our sustainability goals aim to enhance lives while minimising environmental impact, reducing our carbon footprint, promoting clean energy and benefiting stakeholders.
We plan to create five parks on site, providing recreational outdoor spaces for leisure use, social gatherings and employees.
Our development will ensure there is a 10% biodiversity net gain through preservation of key habitats and off- and on-site biodiversity enhancements.
Working with the Northumberland County Council (NCC), QTS will explore the viability of repurposing heat from the data centre to heat local buildings through a potential District Heating Network (‘DHN’).
A data centre is a building that stores and manages large amounts of digital data. Data centres are essential for businesses, governments and organisations that rely on technology to operate and communicate. You access a data centre whenever you use your mobile phone, access your online banking, store photos in the cloud or any online activity.
Data centres generate important local investment, helping to support local communities and their priorities. Creating a data centre campus at Cambois will bring direct and indirect employment opportunities, both during the construction of the facility and its ongoing operation.
The Cambois data centre is expected to create approximately 1,200 construction jobs and 400 on-site jobs like security, maintenance and logistics support roles once the site is operational. QTS is committed to recruiting from the local area, within 25 miles of the site wherever possible, to establish a local workforce.
The jobs created by QTS’s data centre campuses will extend beyond just those inside the data centre itself. For every job directly created, six to seven other jobs are supported in related industries. QTS expects as many as 2,700 indirect new jobs to be created in related industries.
We are currently working with the Council and other stakeholders to advance the planning process that will enable the data centre campus development. We have submitted an outline planning application to the Northumberland County Council (NCC). The application will be considered by the NCC’s Strategic Planning in early 2025. Upon approval, QTS can start work on site including access arrangement and soil movement, expected in mid to late 2025. QTS will build up to ten data centre buildings totalling up to 540,000 square metres along with ancillary structures, substation, emergency generators and other associated works. The state-of-the-art facility at Cambois would represent a significant inward investment of up to £10 billion, one of the largest in the UK.
Our company and employees donate time, technology and resources to support local programmes and agencies. We are committed to improving communities and changing lives.
For example, elsewhere in the UK we support Thames21 in riverbank clean-up.
In the Netherlands we have supported Children’s Play Week, Foundation for Surinamese Families, Groninger Museum, Netherlands Food Bank, Foodbank Groningen, Thuisbasis Veteranen, Stichting Kwaku and Westerbork Museum.
