WHY QTS

What it means to have QTS in your community

As the digital infrastructure leader, businesses, governments and organisations rely on our data centres. We take our promise to connect the world with purpose, seriously. We do this through:

Career and growth advancement

Data centres require thousands of skilled workers to design, construct and operate. We choose markets like Cambois/Blyth because of access to a highly skilled and motivated workforce.

Environmental stewardship

We achieve our sustainability mission by prioritising both business success and ethical conduct. This means enhancing the lives of employees, customers, investors and communities while preserving the environment. We make sustainable choices across all aspects of our operations.

Giving back

In line with our core values, we engage in a wide range of volunteer opportunities, community outreach and community partnerships to help others in need in the places we work.

Our standards deliver safety, security and speed-to-market

QTS is building new data centres to provide the infrastructure necessary to support the surging demands of an increasingly digital world; and in doing so, we remain committed to minimising environmental impacts. Our data centres feature a water-free cooling system, are built to green building standards and aims to source power from carbon free sources.

How we deliver is just as important as what we deliver

As a data centre sustainability leader, QTS has developed a multi-pronged approach to target water inefficiencies within its portfolio of global data centres and thereby support both the environment and the communities in which it operates.

QTS will use its industry-leading water-free cooling system, significantly reducing requirements on local water supplies. The cooling systems operate with a free-cooling technology which helps to minimise power consumption

Our environmental stewardship sets our data centers apart

Our sustainability goals aim to enhance lives while minimising environmental impact, reducing our carbon footprint, promoting clean energy and benefiting stakeholders.

We plan to create five parks on site, providing recreational outdoor spaces for leisure use, social gatherings and employees.

Our development will ensure there is a 10% biodiversity net gain through preservation of key habitats and off- and on-site biodiversity enhancements.

Working with the Northumberland County Council (NCC), QTS will explore the viability of repurposing heat from the data centre to heat local buildings through a potential District Heating Network (‘DHN’).

Frequently Asked Questions

A data centre is a critical infrastructure building that stores and manages large amounts of digital data. You likely access a data centre whenever you use your mobile phone, access your online banking or medical records, or engage in any digital activity.

Data centres play a critical role for businesses and communities. They enable reliable internet connectivity and ensure secure data storage.

Data centres generate important local investment, helping to support local communities and their priorities. The state-of-the-art facility at Cambois will represent a significant inward investment of up to £10 billion, one of the largest in the UK.

Creating a data centre campus at Cambois will bring direct and indirect employment opportunities, both during the construction of the facility and its ongoing operation.

The Cambois data centre is expected to create approximately 1,200 construction jobs and 400 operational jobs. QTS is committed to recruiting from the local area, within 25 miles of the site wherever possible, to establish a local workforce.

The jobs created by QTS’s data centre campuses will extend beyond just those inside the data centre itself. For every job directly created, six to seven other jobs are supported in related industries. QTS anticipates the creation of up to 2,700 indirect new jobs.

QTS has committed to boosting local technical skills with targets for apprenticeships and internships and the creation of a role for an employment and skills coordinator to work with the Council and local training providers.

QTS goes far beyond building and operating the world’s most advanced, sustainable data centres. We’re committed to the communities we operate in. We’ve been actively working in the communities of Blyth and Cambois to find out where and how we can best support residents. Community groups and associations we’ve been meeting with include The Tute, Isabella Heap Volunteering Group, Briardale House, Lighthouse Community Hub and St. Andrew’s Church. Having seen firsthand the great work these organisations are doing for the community, we’ve been doing what we can to add value to these efforts and bolster the impact that they can make in the local area.

Our data centres follow all appropriate guidance regarding sound and light and are designed in way that helps to reduce noise, lighting, and other potential operational conditions that could impact the surrounding environment and local community.

QTS will implement several measures to mitigate the construction impact to the local community including bringing materials to site through Blyth port and rail, putting on shuttle buses for workers to reduce traffic, no continuous 24-hour activities, and no work on Sundays or Bank Holidays without prior approval from the Northumberland County Council.

On March 4, Northumberland County Council approved QTS’s plans to develop Europe’s largest data centre campus in Cambois, marking a major milestone for the project. The data centre campus will span a total of 540,000 square metres, along with other associated works and structures. Representing a significant inward investment of up to £10 billion—one of the largest in the UK—the state-of-the-art facility will significantly enhance the region’s digital infrastructure.

Following the Council’s approval, construction work is expected to commence on the site toward the end of 2025.
